Institutional

Alongside exhibitions and writing, Dušan Josip Smodej has built organisations, editorial platforms and educational programmes. This work treats institutions as cultural forms in their own right: structures through which artists, ideas, audiences and resources can meet over time.

Smodej founded Fotopub Association in 2014 and directed it until 2022, developing the organisation from a festival platform into a year-round contemporary-art institution with projects in Novo mesto and Ljubljana. In 2018, The Guardian included Fotopub among the world’s best international photography galleries in a selection by Brett Rogers, then director of The Photographers’ Gallery in London.

His role joined artistic and executive responsibility. As Managing Director of Fotopub Festival, he shaped a programme centred on emerging practices, bringing younger artists into sustained contact with established practitioners and creating conditions for experimentation outside conventional exhibition formats. The festival worked across temporary sites in Novo mesto and connected exhibitions with workshops, performances, talks, publishing and a dense collective working environment.

In 2017 the association opened Fotopub Project Space in a disused petrol station designed by architect Milan Mihelič. As its Artistic Director, Smodej made the site a laboratory for direct exchange between artist, space and technician. Over five years it hosted 22 exhibitions, numerous public and private events, and studios for 18 local young artists, while testing materially and financially efficient ways of producing ambitious contemporary art.

Institution-building meant designing the structure behind the programme as carefully as the programme itself. Smodej built and coordinated a team spanning curatorial development, production, communications, design, technical work, legal support and accounting, while connecting Fotopub’s festival, exhibition, residency, educational and international programmes. As founder and director, he held long-term artistic and organisational strategy together with the practical work of financing, staffing, partnership-building and delivery.

Culture.si

Role
Editor-in-Chief

Online magazine and cultural portal
Publisher
Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia

From 2020 to 2022 Smodej served as Editor-in-Chief of Culture.si, the principal English-language portal presenting Slovenian culture to an international readership. He combined editorial leadership with a comprehensive rethinking of the site as public cultural infrastructure.

The editorial work involved setting priorities, commissioning and shaping stories, coordinating contributors, and deciding how the platform could connect current cultural production with the deeper institutional and historical record held in its archive. Rather than treating the portal as a static directory, Smodej developed it as a navigable editorial environment in which events, places, people and research could reinforce one another.

Under his editorship, Culture.si moved through five principal areas — Disciplines, Cultural Heritage, Blog, Collections and Worldwide — with individual discipline pages connecting places, events, education and research. The structure was also an editorial proposition: a way of making a national cultural field legible without flattening the relationships within it.

Smodej also led the redesign together with his coworkers at Beletrina. The work joined editorial strategy, information architecture and artistic direction. Its visual system used framed modules, strong typography, lines, open space and a bright green accent to turn a large body of information into a clear, responsive and accessible reading experience. The archived August 2022 homepage remains a public record of Culture.si during his editorship.

ULAY
Foundation

Role
Founding Board Member

Focus
Curatorial advice · Education · Institutional direction

Smodej served on the board of the ULAY Foundation from 2019 to 2022. His contribution centred on curatorial direction and education: advising how the Foundation could make Ulay’s legacy active in the present, and leading Academia Nuts as its principal public learning programme.

Established by Ulay in 2014 and operating between Amsterdam and Ljubljana, the Foundation preserves and contextualises an oeuvre that moved between performative photography, body art, social action and environmental concern. Smodej’s term spanned the decisive years around the artist’s death in 2020. Rather than working primarily on archive administration, he advised on the Foundation’s broader curatorial orientation and on ways research, publishing, exhibitions and education could extend its public role.

From 2020 to 2022, Smodej and Hana Ostan Ožbolt led Academia Nuts, co-produced by the ULAY Foundation and Fotopub in collaboration with Ljubljana’s art academies and humanities faculties. The para-academic platform brought international and local artists, thinkers, writers, curators and activists into public lectures and intensive semi-public seminars for a selected group of twelve students and recent graduates.

Academia Nuts treated learning as a collective studio rather than a one-directional transfer of expertise. Discussions around art, ecology, philosophy and politics were developed through the participants’ own practices and experiences. For Smodej, the programme connected institutional responsibility to pedagogy: a foundation could care for an artistic legacy while also producing the conditions for new generations to think, argue and work beyond established academic structures.
