Infinite Movement? was a multi-media group exhibition exploring the concepts, ideas and possibilities associated with perpetual motion – a never-ending quest for inexhaustible energy and eternal dynamism. A question mark to everyone, the show doesn’t produce answers, but rather threads elements building a laboratory for a movement beyond art.
From man’s earliest observations to modern scientific theories, we discover the notions of force, energy and motion that shape our understanding of the dynamic world around us, inspired by the pioneers who sought to create perpetual-motion machines, devices capable of generating continuous motion. Despite centuries of research and development, no authentic perpetual motion has yet been discovered. We explore the apparent paradoxes, the laws of thermodynamics and the physical limits that seem to defy the very possibility of infinite motion. Despite the practical realisation of perpetual motion remaining a challenge, the quest for endless motion continues to stimulate our imagination and scientific ambitions.
The last exhibition of 3537, an experimental cultural venue that has been running in the Marais for the last three years, Infinite Movement? presented works of nine french and international artists ranging from students or emerging fresh graduates to well known figures in the art scene. The exhibition was constructed as a work-in-progress, a research laboratory or a living-space, perpetually changing and inciting discourse similarly as 3537 did throughout its short lifespan.
